Phase 1 Treatment & Palatal Expanders in Lansdale & Souderton
Early Treatment for Winning Smiles
Did you know that the American Association of Orthodontists and Dr. Rambo recommend that every child see an orthodontist by age seven? At Rambo Orthodontics, we’re proud to offer phase 1 treatment for kids who could use an early start on their smiles.
Start Strong With Early Orthodontic Care
Dr. Rambo and the American Association of Orthodontists recommend that every child visit their local orthodontic expert by age seven.
One of the best parts about visiting Rambo Orthodontics at this age is that we offer complimentary growth and observation appointments. At this age, Dr. Rambo can spot growth or alignment concerns and provide early care that sets the stage for long-term dental health. Most of the time, treatment isn’t needed until a later age—but if something is going wrong that needs attention, we can step in early and help correct it before it becomes more severe.
Dr. Rambo takes an honest and conservative approach to early orthodontics—she has children of her own and won’t recommend anything she wouldn’t feel comfortable doing for her own family.
How Early Treatment Can Help
For around 10% of kids, early intervention can make all the difference in their smile. Dr. Rambo has the expertise and the gentle touch to make your child’s smile light up, and in some cases, the right care early on can drastically simplify or even eliminate problems later in their orthodontic development.
Let’s take a look at some of the issues early treatment can address, right here.
Protruding Front Teeth
If your child was a big fan of thumbsucking into Elementary school, they may have spent a lot of time pushing their tongue into their front teeth. This can lead to issues with front alignment, which can also mean a greater risk of injury or even tooth loss.
Underbite & Overbite
When the lower jaw sticks out beyond the upper, we call that an underbite. Likewise, an overbite is when the upper jaw protrudes ahead of the lower jaw. This is slightly more common.
In both cases, this can lead to problems with the alignment of your child’s teeth, leading to issues with both chewing and speaking. Some kids also might feel self-conscious about the look of an over or an underbite.
Tooth Crowding Or Overspacing
Your child’s teeth can sometimes come in either too close together, or too far apart. This often happens due to either early or late baby tooth loss, and it can cause developmental and spacing issues moving forward.
Anterior & Posterior Crossbite
This might sound technical, but it just means that the jaw has shifted to one side or another. This can lead to uneven jaw growth, gum recession, and too much wear on the teeth.

Early Treatment Can Help
In each of these cases, Dr. Rambo and the team can help! Early treatment is all about addressing these issues before they get out of hand, meaning their teen orthodontic years can go much more smoothly.
Phase 1 Treatments for Kids
Our early orthodontic treatments help growing smiles stay on track. These appliances can prevent more serious issues later and may reduce or even eliminate the need for future orthodontic work.
Palate Expanders
We use palate expanders to widen the upper jaw and create the space needed for proper alignment. By gradually adjusting the appliance, we correct jaw width problems to guide growth and help prevent more complex crowding or crossbite issues down the road.
This early intervention makes future treatment more efficient and effective.
Phase 1 Braces
When we recommend Phase 1 treatment for your child, we may sometimes place a limited number of braces on a few teeth. This helps to guide the growth of the teeth and make room for the emerging permanent teeth.
With this focused approach, we can address some issues early, sometimes even stopping developing bite problems before they start. Limited braces during Phase 1 can help support proper spacing, improve bite alignment, and make future orthodontic treatment simpler and more effective.
Space Maintainers
When baby teeth fall out too early or adult teeth are slow to come in, we may recommend space maintainers. These small devices hold open the space left behind to prevent neighboring teeth from shifting out of place.
This helps your child’s permanent teeth erupt in the right spots, reducing the need for more intensive treatment later.
Headgear
Orthodontic headgear helps us correct jaw and bite discrepancies, especially when the upper jaw is growing too fast. Worn outside the mouth overnight, headgear gently applies pressure to guide jaw growth so that both the top and bottom jaw grow in harmony.
It's a powerful tool for creating balance in your child’s bite.
Facemasks
Also known as reverse pull headgear, facemasks guide forward growth of the upper jaw when it develops too slowly. We often use this appliance in younger patients to correct underbites and improve overall facial harmony.
Like traditional headgear, it works best when used consistently and early in development.
